A devastating fire outbreak has gutted sections of the popular Plumbing Market at Headbridge, Onitsha, Anambra State, leaving traders reeling from heavy losses and widespread destruction of goods and property.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, March 22, 2026, caused panic in the area as flames rapidly spread across stalls stocked with highly inflammable materials.

The Anambra State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, visited the scene to assess the damage and commiserate with affected victims.

Preliminary findings, according to the police, suggest the fire may have been triggered by heat generated from the storage of inflammable materials, particularly pipes, alongside possible non-compliance with basic fire safety regulations.

CP Orutugu also commended the swift intervention of emergency responders, including the Fire Service and other relevant agencies, whose timely action helped contain the inferno and prevented it from escalating further. He noted that no lives were lost in the incident.

The police chief was accompanied by the Divisional Police Officer of Headbridge Division, CSP Onyinaya Uche, and other stakeholders during the inspection.

The Command, in a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, urged traders and residents to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, especially in the storage and handling of inflammable materials, to avert future occurrences. Continue Reading…
