The Rebirth: Get to know Afrobeats PowerHouse SOPHIA

My name is Sophia, I am a 21 year old Afrobeat R&B artist from the US, my parents are originally from Uganda.

I was raised in the US but was still raised with the African culture, my love for singing started when I used to watch my father recite the Quran with a beautiful voice at a young age, I learned how to sing and recite in Arabic at the age of 10, but then eventually I started getting into secular music on the radio.

One of my favorite artists to listen to was Beyoncé and Rihanna, but then I started getting into old R&B music one of my top favorite classic R&B artists is Toni Braxton, but of course being raised in an African home my all time favorite African artist was Fela Kuti.

And I love listening to Taarab which is a genre of music popular in east African, I believe that music is a feeling, which is why it’s so universal, you may not understand what a person is singing or rapping about but you can definitely feel it through their voice and the rhythm.

My goal as an artist is to make Black people from around the world to feel proud of their African heritage, and have people who don’t know about Africa not to be afraid to explore the African culture, but most importantly having them understand their true identity as “A proud African”.
