Strike Action: Govt offices in Abuja, Kano shutdown

Following the two day warning strike announced by the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress—NLC, some government ministries, departments and agencies in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory—FCT, are currently under lock and key.

On Tuesday morning, major areas in Abuja such as the radio house which accomodates some agencies under the ministry of information and national orientation agency was completely deserted as workers did not show up for work.

Similarly in Kano, banks, government offices and the power sector have been closed for business.

Comrade Ado Riruwai, the Kano State NLC Vice Chairman who led the action, said all government offices in the state have been closed.

He added that plans are being made to proceed to the airport to ensure the grounding of all flights in the state.

Last week, NLC in a communique jointly signed by its national president, Joe Ajaero and Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, said it decided to embark on a two-day warning strike following what it described as the failure of the present administration to dialogue and engage stakeholders within the organised labour on efforts to address the effects of fuel subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit on the “poor masses”.
