The golden orb used for King Charle’s coronation yesterday was carried by Dame Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu. Nwa Nigeria

While some people roll heavy eyeballs and stretch corrupt hands in habitual bribe taking overtures, their colleagues abroad are building personalities and institutions with utmost commitment, never in the garb of compromise, never willing to be foisted on the beams of decadence. Never!

The title of Professor has become the biggest eyesore in our polity because most of its bearers in Nigeria play defense and offense roles at the same time. Asking a herbivorous dog to keep watch over foliages is the biggest mistake a pastoralist can make. Forget about the normal traits of dogs, some have learnt to eat grasses!

During the crowning of King Charles 3, a Nigerian woman, Prof Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu was a compulsory cynosure, she was an orb bearer. To be trusted with the royal orb of Britain means one is reliable to the core, not a thief of trust. Sure, she held the trust tight and focused. Why? In her hands was no ice cream cone but the symbol of sovereignty and power, the people’s choice!

The sovereign British Orb is a 24 carat gold diadem, created in 1661 for the coronation of King Charles 2 by the royal goldsmith, Robert Viner. The orb is the golden imagery of the Christian world with a cross mounted on it, and a tripartite partitioning representing the three continents of the medieval times. The orb signifies that the Monarch’s power is from God. There is no crowning a King or Queen in England without the orb whose bearer must be a highly trusted fellow.

Emeritus Professor, Elizabeth Anionwu, a Nigerian and the first sickle cell nursing specialist in the UK was entrusted with the bearing of the British sovereign orb this time. Wait a minute, she wore a Nigerian attire, notably our traditional head tie called gele, not a British hat. She was looking purely Nigerian, for the records!

Back home, a professor would have escaped with the diadem of the country, only to appear somewhere at night with a fake version, stuttering voluminous lies to cover his crime; serial vote sellers who punish students for exam malpractices. Pitiable! The British orb cost King Charles 2 a whopping 1150 pounds in 1661, calculate the amount in any modern currency and see what our Prof Lizzy was carrying. Give it to a Nigerian based Professor and wait for bad news!

We are tossed to and fro in the boat of distrust and wickedness by those who believe the country is theirs for keeps. They buy off whatever they wish, voters choices inclusive, yet most crumb eaters run behind to queue as usual, behind them. Quite disgusting! This is the last chance for the judiciary to do the needful or the country tips off the mountain edge.

This is POEM.
