Manchester United can tonight against Rangers take a huge step towards sealing a Europa League last-16 spot.
This so-called ‘Battle of Britain’ will be the latest instalment in a long history of clashes between English and Scottish sides in European competition, with this fixture perhaps coming at the best possible time for Man United.
Despite losing four of their last five home games, they have fared much better in Europe, beating both PAOK and Bodo/Glimt at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ so far.
Another victory would leave Ruben Amorim’s side on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages, though they are facing a Rangers side who have the exact same target.
The Scottish side have already claimed a draw against Premier League opposition this season – a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham on matchday six – and they too are well placed to book a place in the knockout stage.
