Manchester City have only eight points from their first five games and only a win will take them into the unseeded play-off positions. They cannot automatically qualify for the last 16 nor be in the play-off seeded positions. It’s not quite what City imagined would happen after earning seven points from their first three Champions League games of the season but their drop in form has put them in danger of an early exit.
Club Brugge are in the unseeded play-off positions. A win at the Etihad could see them be seeded for the play-offs. A draw would see them stay in the unseeded positions and losing to City would only see them eliminated if suffering a heavy loss.
