Chelsea face Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with history on the line for both sides.
The Blues beat Fluminense in their semi-final tie on Tuesday thanks to a brace from new arrival Joao Pedro, while PSG dominated Real Madrid on Wednesday to book their own ticket to this weekend’s final.
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are bidding to become the first English team to win the Club World Cup twice, having hoisted this trophy once before by beating Palmeiras in the 2021 final.
PSG, meanwhile, are making their Club World Cup debut this year. As well as possibly etching their names in this tournament’s history, should they emerge victorious on Sunday, Luis Enrique’s crew have already surpassed their club-record wins tally from 2015-16 under Laurent Blanc, their semi-final win over Real being the team’s 48th victory of the season.
A win for Chelsea, who also finished as runners-up in 2012, would lift them alongside Bayern Munich (2x: 2013 and 2020), Corinthians (2x: 2000 and 2012), Barcelona (3x: 2009, 2011 and 2015) and Real Madrid (5x) as the only multi-time Club World Cup champions. But if they lose, the Blues will be the first team to fall twice at the tournament’s final hurdle.
