JUST IN: ECOWAS meets in Abuja, resumes talks on Niger

Following the recalcitrant disposition of the junta controlled government in Niger Republic, the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States—ECOWAS are currently holding the long awaited Extraordinary Summit of the regional body over the political face-off in the former French colony.

The summit which is holding in Abuja and headed by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, chairman of the regional bloc, will be discussing on developments in Niger, more especially, on the next line of actions that will follow up on the resolutions and ultimatum issued to the coupists. Continue Reading…

Recall that during the last Extraordinary Summit of the regional bloc—ECOWAS in July 30, a number of sanctions were slammed on the junta government.

ECOWAS also directed the coupists to release and reinstate president Bazoum who was booted out of office by the military rulers.

Meanwhile, present in the ongoing Extraordinary Summit are, Julius Maada Bio of Sierra-Leone; Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau; Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast; Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana; Macky Sall of Senegal; Patrice Talon of Benin and Faure Gnassingbe of Togo.

The Gambia and Liberia are member-States being represented by their Ministers of Foreign Affairs

Also attending are Presidents Evariste Ndayishmiye of Burundi and Mohammed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania. Continue Reading…
