The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe after allegations that he secretly married a woman in the United States. The marriage reportedly took place on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, Texas. The news broke after a video of the ceremony, posted by the bride’s sister, went viral on social media, prompting the church to take action.

In a statement issued on January 16, 2025, the Diocese explained that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had entered into marriage without completing the necessary canonical procedures. The statement, signed by Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri, and Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, Chancellor, stated that the priest had incurred a “Latae Sententiae” suspension in accordance with Canon 1394 §1. This means that Fr. Oghenerukevwe is now suspended from all priestly duties and is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest in any capacity within the Diocese.

Fr. Oghenerukevwe had previously sought to be released from his priestly obligations, but the Diocese clarified that he was expected to complete formal processes before taking any personal decisions. Despite this, he went ahead with the marriage, leading to his suspension.
