The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is currently holding an extra-ordinary meeting of its member states in Abuja.
The ongoing ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit focuses on the political, peace, and security situation in the region.

The meeting is expected to review the embargo slammed by ECOWAS on Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Mali, where military junta are in control.
Recall that at various times, Mali, August 2020; Burkina Faso, September 2022; and Niger, July 2023, all experienced military coups and were sanctioned by the regional bloc, a step that had escalated hostility within the region.
However, the military-led juntas of Burkina-Faso, Mali, and Niger, in late January, announced their withdrawal over “illegal sanctions” harming their people.
