British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak

Britain paid an additional 100 million pounds ($126 million) to Rwanda in April, supplementing the earlier 140 million pounds, as the costs for its plan to relocate asylum seekers to the East African country continue to escalate.

On top of the 240 million pounds Britain has sent to Rwanda, London is also set to pay an additional 50 million pounds next year.

The Rwanda scheme is a strategy used by Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister to discourage illegal migration.

The controversial policy has evolved into a potential threat to Sunak’s leadership, particularly with an upcoming election expected next year.

Also, this came against the backdrop of the UK Supreme Court ruling that Rwanda is not a secure enough third nation to send asylum seekers to.

Tom Pursglove, the recently appointed minister of immigration, responded by saying that the payments should be viewed in light of the £8 million the government spends every day on hotel accommodations for asylum seekers and as a means of eventually reducing expenses.

Cabinet minister Lucy Frazer on Monday said that British lawyers could be sent to Rwandan courts as part of a new treaty to finally implement the government’s plan to fly asylum seekers to the African nation. Continue Reading…
